Where to stay
Where to stay in Barcelona: what each price level buys
Barcelona is a walkable city, so the neighbourhood matters less than you would expect — and more than you would expect at exactly two points.
Three tiers, and what is in each
Budget: Poble Sec, Sants and Gracia. Mid: Eixample, Sant Pere and El Born. Premium: Passeig de Gràcia, Barceloneta and Sarrià.
The difference between the tiers is less about quality than about location and quiet. Gracia, for instance, is a pleasant residential quarter with a nightlife of its own; it simply is not in the historic centre.
The two points that actually matter
The first is El Born. It sits against the Gothic Quarter, it is close to the sea, and the standard of its restaurants is high. That combination is hard to find elsewhere in the city at the same price.
The second is Barceloneta. It is expensive and touristy, and what you are mostly paying for is proximity to the beach. If the beach is not the centre of the trip, that money buys less than it appears to.
Why the neighbourhood is less critical here
Barcelona has six metro lines and the city itself is walkable. A ten-journey T-Casual costs €11.35 and is also valid on the airport train — check which terminal you are arriving at.
In practice: a neighbourhood two stops from the centre is not really "far". It is usually quieter at night, which is generally a benefit.
Two things worth settling before you travel
Sagrada Família tickets sell out weeks ahead, and it is not something that resolves itself on the day.
And if you are comparing fares: Girona (GRO) is cheaper, but it is about ninety minutes by bus from Barcelona. It makes sense mainly if you are staying in the north of the city anyway.
Barcelona is forgiving about where you sleep, thanks to the metro and its walkability. El Born gives the best location per unit of price; Barceloneta is where it is easiest to pay for proximity you will not use.
