Bangkok: what to settle before you book
A ten-and-a-half hour flight behaves differently from a three-hour one. The booking window is longer, the season matters more, and the question of where to sleep is really a question about transport.
There is no regular direct route — and that changes the planning
El Al runs a direct Bangkok service seasonally, mainly in winter. The rest of the year the route is a single connection, and the most convenient go through Dubai or Istanbul.
In practice this means comparing Bangkok fares is not comparing one number. A short, well-timed connection can be worth more than a cheap ticket with a long wait, and on a ten-and-a-half hour journey you feel that difference the next day.
Season here is not only weather
The dry season, November to March, is the most comfortable and the most attractive — and it is also peak. April is Songkran and very hot; May and June are shoulder.
The booking window we aim at for Bangkok is longer than for Europe: ten to sixteen weeks ahead. The days that tend to be cheaper are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Where to stay means which station
In Bangkok the neighbourhood question is mostly a question of access to the BTS Skytrain and the MRT. Sukhumvit with rail access is the most convenient; Khao San is cheap but loud and touristy.
Mid-range: Silom, Sukhumvit around Nana–Asok, and Pratunam. Premium: Thong Lo, Sathorn and the Riverside.
Bangkok traffic is why this matters. A hotel that looks central on a map but sits away from a station can add an hour to your day, and that outweighs a small difference in nightly rate.
Arrival, money and visas
From Suvarnabhumi: the Airport Rail Link takes about 30 minutes at ฿45, or Grab runs roughly ฿300–400. Don Mueang (DMK) mainly serves low-cost carriers, so if you have an onward domestic flight, check which airport it leaves from.
The currency is the baht. ATMs are everywhere, but fees are high. Israeli passport holders enter Thailand visa-free for stays up to 30 days.
And for getting around: Grab is usually cheaper than a metered taxi, including on short hops.
For Bangkok: book ten to sixteen weeks out, aim at November–March, choose the hotel by its distance to a BTS or MRT station, and check whether your connection is short, not only whether it is cheap.
