Amsterdam or Vienna: two cities, two different holidays
Both are European culture cities, both are easy to reach, and they suit completely different kinds of trip.
Getting there
Vienna is about three and a half hours in the air, Amsterdam about five. The booking window we aim at is six to ten weeks for Vienna, eight to fourteen for Amsterdam.
From the airport: Vienna has the CAT in 16 minutes (€12) or the S-Bahn in 25 (€4.30). Amsterdam has a direct train to Centraal in 17 minutes (€5.40). Both are among the best-connected in Europe, and arrival is not part of the problem in either.
Season decides differently in each
Amsterdam peaks April to August — April is tulip season — and the value window is September–October: still pleasant, less crowded, prices easing. In July and August the city is very busy.
Vienna peaks in summer, but the interesting recommendation is December, for the Christmas markets, or April–May. Vienna in December is a destination in its own right rather than a winter compromise.
Where to stay
Amsterdam: Jordaan is the heart, expensive but the location earns it; the Canal Ring is spectacular. Mid-range sits in De Pijp and the eastern centre. Budget runs to Amsterdam Noord and Oud-West.
Vienna: Neubau, the seventh district, is full of galleries, boutiques and restaurants and is close to everything — the clear pick. The premium tier is the Innere Stadt; the budget end is Margareten and Favoriten.
What each does better
Amsterdam is a city of large museums and advance planning. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and the Anne Frank House all want booking — the Anne Frank House three to four weeks ahead, with no walk-ins. The bikes are part of the experience too, and the rules are worth learning before you ride.
Vienna runs slower. The Kunsthistorisches holds Vermeer, Bruegel and Caravaggio; a Viennese café lets you sit for hours over one cup, which is culture rather than tolerance; and the Opera sells standing tickets at around €10 on the day.
In one line: Amsterdam rewards planning, Vienna rewards having none.
For a museum-heavy trip with advance bookings, Amsterdam in September–October. For something slower, and especially in December, Vienna. Both are easy to reach and both are under half an hour from the airport.
